Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not only his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
